Letters to the Editor in Maui

The election vote in Maui county was 61% for Kerry. I just have to share a few of the most recent letters to the editor in the Maui News that make this voter sentiment clear.

Administration attempting to install its own shah
The public doesn’t seem to have grasped the significance of President Bush’s carrier landing and display of the “Mission Accomplished” banner. Few remember that this event came just days after our troops had accomplished the mission of securing the Iraqi oil fields. It was time to celebrate, time to pop the cork.

Halfway into the first year of occupation, Vice President Dick Cheney announced that “we” (Halliburton) were working to increase oil production by six times its current capacity. This puts our government-petroleum industry in a position to undermine OPEC by flooding the market with cheap oil just as we did with Iran’s oil when we had “our” shah of Iran in power. For Bush and Cheney there is only one thing left to be done. They need to find and install “their” shah of Iraq.

Why did Bush not wait for the U.N. inspectors to search and discover that Iraq didn’t have weapons of mass destruction? Because he would have lost the rationale and momentum to invade and gain control of Iraq’s oil production.

Over 1,000 Americans and over 10,000 Iraqis have died so that our petroleum industry could realize bigger profits while Bush speaks to us of morality by voicing his concerns about stem cells in a petri dish.

Good thinkin’ Eddie. Now how about this one?

When in doubt, blame the other guy’s deity

“God is great” (Letters, Nov. 11). Aren’t those the exact words that the Islamic terrorists use as they fly planes into buildings, behead foreign workers, and detonate suicide bombs? “He had his mighty hands in the re-election.” Ah hah, now we know who rigged it.

Don’t you think it’s time for all religious human beings to stop blaming their chosen god for their own stupidity, intolerance and acts of violence? If God is a rational entity, he’s got to be real ticked off at these folks always pointing the finger at him. God shouldn’t be the universal fall guy.

Atta boy Mikey! And we thought that Eddie had some issues. But wait – there’s more!

Electronic voting can be done without detection

The only way to detect tampering with electronic voting is to isolate each computer and then carefully inspect the vote-tallying software and hardware just before the voting begins.

Otherwise the software engineer can install a code which modifies the numbers and then writes over itself, completely erasing the evidence of tampering.

Way to go, Stevie! Let’s mix some conspiracy theory into the batter. Uh Oh . . .

Battle is between moral structure, inherent good
Many people are now suggesting the breakup of the United States. This is not a new idea, of course, and, in fact, over the last century a number of spiritual teachers and psychics have actually predicted as much.

Most of these predictions have been based on cataclysmic changes and disruptions, rather than on political justifications, or on fundamental human reasons or differences.

The United States is now divided. One side of the divide possesses a great deal of low-information, corrupt and reactionary irrationality. The other side possess more universal, inclusive, progressive policies. (em mine)

The first group strains to maintain a religious authoritarian society, believing that man cannot act ethically or ideally without an enforcing authority which is external to themselves. Without a Christian God, for example, many believe that man is and would remain sinful and unable to control himself or his society.

Within the second group are people who believe the power to make good manifest in the world comes from within the soul of man. This group believes that morality compelled from outside, whether by law, tradition, creed, doctrine or an exclusive deity, will not create a better man or society. It believes morality based on fear of punishment or morality based on beliefs lacking in understanding or self-realization can never bring about societal or personal well-being. This group perceives the majesty of man and believes in divine imminence, but it does not believe that morality should ever be imposed by one group onto another.
